Awaiting Surgery and Preparing for Schooling

Ten-year-old Juliana suffers from a cleft palate, which significantly impedes her speech. Although she doesn't have an intellectual disability, she has trouble understanding what others say. Currently, Juliana is awaiting surgery that could help her speak. However, it's not yet known whether it will actually take place, as she was unable to undergo it several years ago due to her anemia. Furthermore, the cost of the procedure may pose a challenge.

Due to her disability, Juliana currently doesn't attend school. Her parents, who work as farmers, provide for her primary education. Besides Juliana, they have five other children, whose upkeep requires many sacrifices. Both Juliana and her parents hope that after the surgery, Juliana will be able to attend school. Juliana's mother hopes that her daughter will work as an IT technician in the future, and Juliana herself dreams of starting a business.

Juliana is very popular among her friends. Many other children accompanied us during our visit. Juliana herself lives next door to another scholarship recipient, Eliana, with whom she is friends.

The Heart Scholarship provides a tremendous amount of support to Juliana and her family. The scholarship funds are used for basic necessities, such as food and clothing, and recently also for the purchase of medications for malaria and anemia. Despite enormous hardships, Juliana bravely fights every day.
